Art Cologne: Tomás Maldonado solo show
Galería de las Misiones is exited to announce its first participation in Art Cologne in the edition of 2025. The gallery will be presenting a solo show by the internationally renown artist Tomás Maldonado
Tomás Maldonado was an Argentine visual artist, industrial designer, and design theorist, born in Buenos Aires on April 25, 1922, and passed away in Milan, Italy, on November 26, 2018. He was a central figure in Argentina’s artistic renewal during the 1940s and one of the main design theorists of the second half of the 20th century. Maldonado was a founding member of the Concrete Art Movement and advocated for a scientific, systematic approach to industrial design.
His academic and professional career was especially consolidated during his time as director at the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) in Ulm, Germany, from 1954 onward. There, he promoted a shift in design education toward more scientific and theoretical methods, departing from the Bauhaus's expressionist style. In the late 1960s, he moved to Italy, where he continued to excel as a designer and educator at institutions such as the Polytechnic University of Milan and the University of Bologna.
Maldonado also served as president of the Executive Committee of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design and directed the magazine Casabella. He received numerous honors, including the 2012 Konex Special Mention for his lifetime achievement in Visual Arts. After a 45-year hiatus from painting, he resumed this creative activity in 2000.
His work and thinking encompass not just art and design but also the relationship of design with technology, the environment, and the philosophy of technology, making him a key figure in contemporary thought on these topics.
